IDP NEWS

The Sri Lankan Government sources have announced that 272,390 civilians have arrived into the government controlled areas since 30th April from Mullaithivu (so called Wanni), while expecting the arrivals of remaining people. Majority of them are women and children. Current status of the people looks very pathetic, where the fleeing IDPs are affected both physically and psychologically. They have hardly brought any belongings with them.

Of these new IDPs, around 30,000 people are expected to reach Mannar within next few days. The remaining population will most likely be transported to Vavuniya, increasing the number of IDPs further, within this district. All these IDPs are in need of immediate basic humanitarian assistance.

Immediate needs of  the IDPs affected by the conflict include;

  • Cooked meals
  • Clothing and footwear - sarongs/ lungies, kaftans, shirts, t-shirts, under garments for men, women and children, children’s clothing,
    bed sheets and towels.
  • Dry rations – canned food, sugar, milk powder, infant food, noodles, biscuits and other cereal items etc.
  • Drinking water facilities – plastic water containers & buckets
  • Emergency toilets
  • Tarpaulin (tents), temporary shelter materials
  • Non-food items – rubber slippers, soap, tooth brush/paste, sanitary towels, baby feeding bottles, plates, cups, mugs, mosquito repellents, mats etc.
  • First aid medicines

CTF has already started a  mission to collect public donations at its offices in Puttalam, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Colombo.

CTF humbly appeals to donors, philanthropists and all others to extend their support in providing immediate humanitarian assistance to the affected population.

We also appeal to the many International Institutions who have worked with CTF and also to Organizations who would like to partner us in providing this much needed assistance.

What CTF has been doing in the field?

CTF has deployed an emergency team to join with Vavuniya team since early February 2009. CTF serves in five welfare centres located in Vavuniya district – namely, Vavuniya Primary School, Vavuniya Secondary School, Sayvappragasha Maha Vidyalayam, Gamini Maha Vidyalaya and Menic Farm school. CTF provides,

  • Supplementary & complementary foods
  • Water & sanitation
  • Non-food items
  • Mobile clinics
  • Psycho-social activities

We are happy and proud that International Organizations like Cordaid of Netherlands and Diakonie of Germany have supported CTF to provide the many such services to these Welfare Camps.

In Mannar, we have mobilized a new emergency team since April 2009. CTF have already provided much needed clothing to those admitted at the Base hospital in Mannar.
In addition CTF has also provided hospital equipment.

The CTF team in Mannar is fully geared to act immediately to assist these new IDP’s arriving into Mannar.

Please join CTF in the emergency humanitarian mission.
