Project Title: People’s SAARC 2008 Towards a People’s Union of South Asia

Project Outline/Objective:

People’s SAARC is an annual regional convergence of peoples’ organizations and movements in parallel to the annual SAARC summit. It is a platform that brings together those who struggle for peace and justice, secularism, democracy and federalism in the national and regional context. It’s objectives are;
1. to strive for the creation of a People’s Union of South Asia;
2. to struggle for the full enjoyment of the civil and political rights of
Citizens in South Asia;
3. to strive for the full enjoyment of economic, social and cultural
rights in the region

Peoples SAARC 2008 will take place on 18, 19 and 20 July in Colombo that will host a three days convergence of at least 500 delegates from the region and 500 from Sri Lanka, as well as a mass mobilization of over 5,000 Sri Lankan from various parts of the country, including the North and East on 20 July for a demonstration of South Asian people’s unity and for a people’s agenda in South Asia.

CTF will send a delegation of 20 people for the first two day sessions while organizing a workshop on IDPs on the first day and would bring about 500 people to join the mass rally on the third day.

Project Title: Mine Risk Education.

GN Divisions: 32 villages in Mannar district and 36 villages in Vavuniya district.
Beneficiaries: All the people in the conflict areas, particularly the displaced persons and people who are returning for resettlement.
Project Outline/Objective:
CTF is amongst the key organizations in the field of Mines Risk Education (MRE) in Sri Lanka and has been implementing MRE project since 2003 with the financial support of Unicef. The main objectives of the project are:

  1. to educate the people on the risks of mines and UXOs and protective mechanisms through seminars, house to house visits, direct presentations, puppet shows, TV/Audio programmes, street dramas, etc.
  2. to conduct research and Data collection on mines and UXOs;
  3. to produce and distribute posters, handouts, stickers, etc to attract greater awareness of people on mines risk etc.
